The overall objective of this project is to create milk biomarkers based on specific milk fatty acids for identification of cows with reproductive disorders and metabolic disturbances. Milk will be analysed by Fourier-transform mid-infrared technology. An important value of this project for the dairy farmers is that the milk analyses required for decisions will be readily available for advisors and farmers, as all cows in Swedish official milk recording system are already sampled monthly. There is great potential in so far unutilized data, especially in MFA which both have such a high concentration in the milk that they can be analyzed with a high accuracy and reflect the metabolism of individual cows. The goal is that all dairy farmers who are part of the SOMRS should be given the means to be able to take appropriate measures, at the individual, group and herd level, to facilitate sustainable milk production.

The most recent carbon footprint of Swedish pig production was presented in 2009, and no full LCA have been published in 15 years. In recent years major improvements have occurred in Swedish pig production and an updated environmental profile for Swedish pork is needed. The project will identify …

During the last decade, neonatal porcine diarrhoea (NPD) has become an increased problem in Swedish herds. Clostridium (C.) perfringens type A (CpA) and C. difficile (Cd) have been highlighted as causes of NPD but their importance has also been questioned. We have previously demonstrated that CpA …

Mixed leys are among the most important crops in northern Sweden for the dairy production. Mapping the within and between fields variability of the biomass, nitrogen (N) uptake and potentially also forage quality (digestibility and neutral detergent fibre) would help farmers to optimise their …

Flea beetles are serious insect pests in spring oilseed rape. After neonicotinoid seed treatments were restricted, no effective chemical control methods are currently available for flea beetle control. Crop protection has therefore become a serious limiting factor for growing the crop. In an …

In nature, piglets are exposed to a wide range of bacteria that promote a balanced (healthy) gut microbiota. On the farm, routine cleaning can limit exposure to beneficial bacteria leading to an unbalanced gut microbiota. An unbalanced gut microbiota increases the risk of health problems and alters …

Motor laterality, such as left or right-handedness, is a well-known asymmetric phenomenon in both humans and animals, incl. horses. Concurrently, lameness caused by orthopaedic injury is a common cause for asymmetry. In our study of riding horses in training, 73 % had motion asymmetries, warranting …
