Pastern-cannon bone dermatitis (PCBD) is a collective name for an inflammation of the skin on the lower parts of horse legs. Breeds with heavy feathered legs especially tend to contract this disease. The aim of this Swedish – Norwegian study is to improve the possibilities of successfully diagnosing and treating PCBD in the North Swedish Draught horse and the Dole horse, with focus on associated pathogens such as Chorioptes mites, fungi and bacteria. We intend to: 1. examine the occurrence of these disorders in these Nordic breeds with a questionnaire; 2. characterize PCBD clinically and microbiologically in the same breeds; 3. develop a PCR diagnostic method for the detection of Chorioptes mites in cutaneous swabs; 4. compare four different methods to test and diagnose Chorioptes mites; 5. evaluate the efficacy of different treatments against Chorioptes mites (in vivo), and against fungi and bacteria (in vitro).

During the last decade, neonatal porcine diarrhoea (NPD) has become an increased problem in Swedish herds. Clostridium (C.) perfringens type A (CpA) and C. difficile (Cd) have been highlighted as causes of NPD but their importance has also been questioned. We have previously demonstrated that CpA …

In nature, piglets are exposed to a wide range of bacteria that promote a balanced (healthy) gut microbiota. On the farm, routine cleaning can limit exposure to beneficial bacteria leading to an unbalanced gut microbiota. An unbalanced gut microbiota increases the risk of health problems and alters …

Flea beetles are serious insect pests in spring oilseed rape. After neonicotinoid seed treatments were restricted, no effective chemical control methods are currently available for flea beetle control. Crop protection has therefore become a serious limiting factor for growing the crop. In an …

The antibody quality of the colostrum is essential for the newborn calf, as the calf is totally dependent on the passive transfer of colostral antibodies during the first 24 hours of life to keep healthy and survive until weaning. A high proportion of the cows have insufficient antibodies in the …
