A main challenge for regions with intensive livestock production is phosphorus (P) surplus on farms, resulting in low P use efficiency and losses to waters. The project will provide solutions to increase P recycling from animal manure. This will decrease our dependency on imported P fertilizers, reduce the environmental load and allow for economic development on farms. We will study a scenario where a biogas plant is used as a node to process and upgrade the digestate for optimizing redistribution of nutrients to arable land. The liquids are returned to nearby land and the solids, with high P content, can be transported further away. We will collaborate with More biogas in Kalmar for substrate production. Our studies include 1)A field study of the fertilizer value of the liquid fraction, also with the N2 applied method for improved N content, 2)Scenarios for optimal redistribution of NPK to farms at N. Öland, and 3) Development of a method for regional planning of manure P recycling

The ability of milk to coagulate is crucial for cheese production. We have previously shown high occurrence of non-coagulating milk from Swedish Red Dairy cattle and identified milk proteins as potential markers for this undesirable trait. In this project we will increase the understanding of the …

This interdisciplinary project examines how Swedish dairy farmers, given different types of policy instruments, are affected by the ongoing structural transformation in the primary production. The study will improve our understanding about how the ongoing structural change affects profitability in …

Cereal production is limited by many different factors. Leaf diseases are often well known, while diseases on roots are more difficult to identify. Root diseases are often caused by oomycetes, fungus-like microorganisms that live for years in soil and on old root debris, parasitizing the roots of …

A sustainable use of phosphorus fertilizers has engaged a large number of researchers, especially how to measure
the soil content of available phosphorus. However, the development of results to useful methods for agriculture has
not been a priority. The recommendations are based on extraction with …

The purpose of this project is to investigate to what extent substances in algae inhibit microbial methane formation in cows. Several substances, so-called bioactive substances, in red, green and brown algae, have a significant methane reducing effect. These are promising results but in order to …

The carbon footprint for ruminants is high compared to other food products of animal origin but grazing animals such
as beef and lamb have other positive effects on the environment such as increased biodiversity and carbon
sequestration. Beef- and lamb producers need clear guidelines on how to …
