Icelandic horses are increasingly popular in Sweden and Norway. Their strength lies in their unique gaits, however, in lame horses this trait becomes a weakness. Evaluating not only lameness but also the leg of origin for lameness in any gait other than trot is exceptionally challenging. Today, we lack the most basic knowledge of how Icelandic horses move in the different gaits and how these gaits change in the event of lameness. Biomechanical research on lameness has excelled due to the use of automatic computerized sensor analysis. However, such analysis is currently limited to use during trot. The aim of this project is to study how Icelandic horses move in the different gaits; develop new algorithms for automatic classification and coding of these gaits; as well as identify sensitive symmetry variables to detect not only lameness but also origin of lameness in the different gaits. These findings can also be used to quantify gait traits for genetic studies as well as a breeding tool.
Islandshästar blir allt mer populära i Skandinavien.

A cornerstone of the Swedish Food Strategy is trust in Swedish food production. Yet each year Swedish farmers and food processors lose both money and trust due to food fraud, especially for non-Swedish meat relabelled as Swedish. Most fraud remains undetected. A recent analytical development, Rapid …

Introduction of African swine fever to Sweden would be devastating for the national pig industry. Infected wild boar are considered the most likely route of introduction to Swedish domestic pigs and preventive measures are needed. Knowledge of how infection from wild boar to pigs can be prevented, …

Free living nematodes (FLN) and root-knot nematodes (RKN) are increasing problems in root and tuber crops such as potato, sugar beet and carrot. There is a need for effective sanitation techniques and tolerant crops/varieties to keep population levels low in the rotation. Recently, the severe …

Brachyspira pilosicoli causes spirochetal diarrhea resulting in reduced growth and great economic losses in pig herds. The disease is treated with antibiotics but today we see an increased incidence of antibiotic resistance in the bacteria, which may lead to difficulties to treat the disease in the …

The aim of the project is to develop tools which can be used for individually adapted lactation lengths based on the biological conditions of the cow. Today a one year calving interval and a short lactation period, is recommended. The recommendations are based on 30 years old information and do not …

During recent decades the area with brushwood has increased in the Swedish rural landscape. A study has shown that the annual harvest of brushwood for fuel purposes could amount to about 6 TWh. Some advantages with the utilization of brushwood as fuel are that the growth areas do not compete with …
