It is well known that storage of animal manure and digestate causes emissions of methane (CH4), nitrous oxide (N2O) and ammonia (NH3). A crust on liquid manure acts both as a physical barrier for NH3 and as a biofilter that oxidize CH4 and NH3. However, N2O can be formed in some crusts, and there is currently a lack of knowledge on how to optimally design a crust in order to promote CH4 and NH3 oxidation without increasing N2O emissions.
The aims of this project are to:
• Investigate the physical, chemical and microbiological composition of different crusts and reveal connections to their CH4 oxidation capacity under Swedish climatic conditions.
• Evaluate if high CH4 oxidation capacity relates to risks for N2O production.
• Evaluate how much methane that can be oxidized in crusts with different origin
• Cost/benefit-calculations.
Vid lagring av stallgödsel och rötrest sker emissioner av metan, lustgas och ammoniak. Svämtäcken kan dels utgöra en fysisk barriär mot ammoniakavgång och dels fungera som ett biofilter där metan och ammoniak oxideras. Vissa svämtäcken kan dock bilda lustgas, och det är idag oklart hur ett optimalt svämtäcke ska utformas. Det är viktigt att åtgärder som främjar metan- eller ammoniakoxidering inte resulterar i ökad lustgasavgång.
I projektet ska vi:
• Undersöka svämtäckens fysiska, kemiska och mikrobiologiska sammansättning under svenska förhållanden, och hitta kopplingar till deras metan-och ammoniakoxidationskapacitet
• Utvärdera om hur mycket metan som kan brytas ner i svämtäcken med olika ursprung
• Utvärdera om hög metanoxidationskapacitet kan leda till hög lustgasavgång
• Beräkna den ekonomiska och miljömässiga nyttan med svämtäcken
