Blueberry taste is a defect appearing at irregular intervals in individual dairy herds' bulk tank milk, especially in northern Sweden. If there is a complaint, the producer receives an immediate price reduction and risks being cut off from delivery as long as the problem persists. The cause of "blueberry" taste has not yet been determined. The problem is most common during winter months. In recent years, SLU has received two smaller national grants to work on the problem, part of a LivsID grant (SLF) and one from Family Kamprad's Foundation (research programs attached). In those projects, we have recently identified an analysis technique that can link the taste defect to chemical changes in milk and feed, which is a breakthrough. To be able to explain why the changes in the milk occur on the farms, we now need to collect more milk and feed samples and animal data over a longer period of time. The results will form the basis of an advisory and action package to help affected producers.

Peat use in horticulture is increasingly discussed due to its climate-relevance and the disturbance of mires. At the
same time, peat is the most important, natural horticultural growing media constituent and only a few other organic
constituents have gained acceptance in horticulture, but cannot …

Slippery floors results in falls and injuries which can be fatal. Moreover, on dairy farms slippery floors impede oestrus behaviour and ease of heat detection and as result cause economical losses due to impaired fertility. Grooving is the most common way to treat concrete floors to reduce …

We are facing a protein shift in which a portion of the animal based protein in our diet needs to be replaced by plant proteins to reduce the climate impact from the food sector. Many agricultural by-streams contain high value proteins not used to their full potential. We aim to recover proteins …

A primary reason for unhealthy legs and claws are unsuitable floor properties in dairy houses,
which may result in slippery floors and slip injuries to cows and mastitis.
The hygiene of a floor surface and floor properties affect the cow claw/floor interaction and gait.
The aim is to determine an …

The transition from winter-feeding to pasture involves a considerable diet change that might compromise the health of horses. Diseases like colic as well as insulin dysregulation and pasture associated laminitis are related to diet changes and pasture intake. However, little information exist on …

The purpose of the project is to analyse stable cultures in cyberspace in Sweden and Norway. In recent years, questions about the welfare of horses have been debated in social media and norms for horse-keeping are created on Internet. In this project, these norms are conceptualised as stable …

Using split fertilization of nitrogen (N) in wheat production is today well-established to increase protein content and adjust fertilization. However, deep knowledge and understanding of N uptake and remobilization during late stages of crop development are missing. Moreover, while split …
