The aim of the project is to study effects of LED-light on milk production and activity in dairy cows. The main hypotheses are that LED light allows maintained cow activity and milk production with less energy used for illumination, and that LED-light makes it possible to apply a dark period during the natural night without decreased milk yield. Two experiments will be included to identify suitable wavelength and light intensity day and night. Activity, milk yield and hormones that are affected by light and that regulate milk production will be determined. The results from the two experiments will be validated on 6-10 commercial farms. The project group includes scientists at SLU, in Denmark and Norway, the company Heliospectra AB and Arla Foods Amba.
The expected output of the project is a better understanding of circadian rhythm in cows and recommendations for LED-light in dairy barn for lowered energy use at maintained or higher activity and milk production.

Antimicrobial resistance (AMR) is a global health threat. The WHO global action plan on AMR mentions LA-MRSA (Livestock-associated Methicillin Resistant Staphylococcus aureus) that is prevalent in pigs in many countries. The public health threat is generally low but for affected individuals it is a …

Zinkoxid (ZnO) in feed prevents post weaning diarrhoea (PWD) and mortality in weaned piglets but, for environmental reasons, ZnO will be banned in the EU in 2022 despite that there remain herds that are dependent on the use of ZnO (or antibiotics) at weaning.
By metagenomic analysis (sequencing …

The ability of milk to coagulate is crucial for cheese production. We have previously shown high occurrence of non-coagulating milk from Swedish Red Dairy cattle and identified milk proteins as potential markers for this undesirable trait. In this project we will increase the understanding of the …

This interdisciplinary project examines how Swedish dairy farmers, given different types of policy instruments, are affected by the ongoing structural transformation in the primary production. The study will improve our understanding about how the ongoing structural change affects profitability in …
