Even if Sweden is historically regarded as a water-affluent country, lately sustainable water use and water circularity have become topics of high concern. Irrigation is dependent on high quality water resources, and the need for accessible water resources becomes stronger under exceptionally dry conditions, when crop loss and stress on drinking water are strongly felt at multiple parts of the country. In this project we address the question of treated urban wastewater quality, and how does the effluent water from different treatment plants compares with the EU regulations on irrigation with treated wastewater (TW). We also study the response of the plants and crop quality to irrigation with TW, in controlled field experiments. The project results can serve as a practical guideline for agricultural producers and wastewater treatment plants.

Colibacillosis is a common disease in poultry and includes both local and systemic infections. Increased knowledge is necessary for development of effective methods to prevent disease, such as improved management routines, modification of environment, and vaccine development. The first study (WP1) …

A major challenge facing agriculture is handling water excess and deficit exacerbated by climate change, while reducing eutrophication. Controlled drainage (CD) has the potential to address these issues and improve yield stability. Despite CDs clear benefits and state subsidies for CD installation, …

The goal with this project is to increase the profitability and production efficiency on Swedish dairy farms by renewing
the genetic evaluation of the breeding value of temperament in dairy cows. We want to investigate if automatic
recordings of behaviour using SLU Gigacow on farm level can improve …

To grow with reduced use of glyphosate is of great concern driven by the requirements for integrated pest management, the risk of herbicide resistance and a potential coming ban on glyphosate. It requires balancing between environmental effects and impact on yield and economy. The project's goal is …

Zinkoxid (ZnO) in feed prevents post weaning diarrhoea (PWD) and mortality in weaned piglets but, for environmental reasons, ZnO will be banned in the EU in 2022 despite that there remain herds that are dependent on the use of ZnO (or antibiotics) at weaning.
By metagenomic analysis (sequencing …

This interdisciplinary project examines how Swedish dairy farmers, given different types of policy instruments, are affected by the ongoing structural transformation in the primary production. The study will improve our understanding about how the ongoing structural change affects profitability in …
