Even if Sweden is historically regarded as a water-affluent country, lately sustainable water use and water circularity have become topics of high concern. Irrigation is dependent on high quality water resources, and the need for accessible water resources becomes stronger under exceptionally dry conditions, when crop loss and stress on drinking water are strongly felt at multiple parts of the country. In this project we address the question of treated urban wastewater quality, and how does the effluent water from different treatment plants compares with the EU regulations on irrigation with treated wastewater (TW). We also study the response of the plants and crop quality to irrigation with TW, in controlled field experiments. The project results can serve as a practical guideline for agricultural producers and wastewater treatment plants.
Även om Sverige historiskt sett är ett land rikt på vatten, är hållbar vattenanvändning och vattencirkularitet behov som allt oftare aktualiseras. Bevattningen är beroende av högkvalitativa vattenresurser, och behovet blir starkare under extremt torra förhållanden, då skördeförlust och stress på dricksvattenresurserna är starkt kännbara i olika delar av landet. I detta projekt kommer vi att adressera frågan om vattenkvalitet av renat avloppsvatten, och hur utgående vattenkvalitet från svenska avloppsreningsverk ser ut jämfört med EU riktlinjer för återanvändning av renat avlopp för bevattning. Vi utforskar även effekten på grödornas och skördens kvalitet vid bevattning av renat avloppsvattnet i fältförsök. Projektets resultat kan användas direkt som riktlinjer till producenter och avloppsreningsverk.
