Oilseed rape (OSR) is a profitable and important crop in Swedish agriculture, especially winter OSR which is cultivated on approximately 100000 ha each year. Cultivation of OSR relies on large inputs of fertilizers and pesticides, which has economic costs as well as negative environmental impacts. In this project, we will develop multifunctional intercropping of winter OSR and legumes to reduce weeds, pathogens and pests and replace some of the nitrogen (N) fertilizer inputs with biologically fixed N. Field experiments will be conducted with both frost sensitive legumes that die during winter and overwintering grain legumes that are harvested together with winter OSR. The experiments will compare management for optimal OSR yield with reduced inputs in terms of N fertilizers, weed and pest control in intercrops. The results will be used for evaluations of the economic, environmental and social sustainability of the different intercrops compared to OSR and grain legume sole crops.
