Development of resistance to anthelmintics is a threat to equine welfare. As with antibiotics, restrictive use with anthelmintics in order to retain the effect is essential. Current recommendation for deworming is targeted selective treatment to individuals shedding a certain amount of parasite eggs. Clinic veterinarians and pathologists have in recent years observed an increase in parasite-related injuries. In parallel, data from the SVA indicate an increase in the frequency of the large bloodworm. The aim of this Norwegian-Swedish collaboration is to investigate whether selective deworming can be linked to an increase in the prevalence of the parasite and parasite-related damages, and to develop a PCR-based test for rapid diagnostic and lastly to validate the effect of grazing hygienic measures as a complement to deworming. It is vital for the horse industry to apply sustainable practices for parasite control in order to minimize the negative health impact of parasitic infections.

Motor laterality, such as left or right-handedness, is a well-known asymmetric phenomenon in both humans and animals, incl. horses. Concurrently, lameness caused by orthopaedic injury is a common cause for asymmetry. In our study of riding horses in training, 73 % had motion asymmetries, warranting …

We work with the vision that it possible to reduce herbicide use and completely abandon glyphosate in reduced and no-till systems by promoting soil health and crop vigour through a diverse crop rotation, cover crops and mechanical weed control. In field experiments, we compare innovative glyphosate …

Adding flowers to the cropping system that support beneficial insects is a promising option to achieve crop protection
in Swedish agriculture and horticulture. However, the wide-spread adoption of this approach has been hampered by
limited economic benefit and the risk of propagating pests and …

Climate projections for Sweden indicate higher temperatures during summer and larger variability in precipitation between years. This poses enormous challenges for Swedish agriculture. The main aim of this project is to investigate relationships between soil management, soil quality and crop yield. …
