Laminitis, an extremely painful disease of the equine foot, is most commonly caused by elevated insulin
concentrations in blood (hyperinsulinemia). Therefore, strategies to reduce hyperinsulinemia in horses are warranted.
Studies in obese children with insulin dysregulation and hyperinsulinemia have identified elevated levels of the
hormone glucagon in blood. To identify novel treatment strategies for preventing laminitis we compared insulin
dysregulation in the horse with that observed in humans. We found that horses with insulin dysregulation also had an
excessive glucagon secretion during an oral sugar test in a small pilot study.
If the results of the pilot study hold true also for a larger population of horses, this would be a breakthrough in the
understanding of the pathophysiology of insulin dysregulation in the horse. This opens up for medical treatment of
these horses since there are treatment strategies for an abnormal glucagon response in humans with -cell
dysregulation.

Young horses can develop cervical vertebral stenotic myelopathy and ataxia, known as "wobbler syndrome" and associated with loss of breeding value, reduced athletic potential and euthanasia. Some wobblers have osteochondrosis of their vertebral facet joints, but it is now known how this relates to …
