Free living nematodes (FLN) and root-knot nematodes (RKN) are increasing problems in root and tuber crops such as potato, sugar beet and carrot. There is a need for effective sanitation techniques and tolerant crops/varieties to keep population levels low in the rotation. Recently, the severe species Meloidogyne chitwoodi has been found in the south of Sweden. There is an urgent need for knowledge on how to limit spread of the nematodes and how to sanitate the fields. The aim of this project is to develop disease management strategies to keep population levels of FLN and RKN as low as possible in the crop rotation. The objectives are: 1) study the host crop status for main crops, 2) evaluate the effect of using resistant inter crops and black fallow, and 3) evaluate potato varieties for tolerance to FLN and RKN. The results are valuable in extension service to farmers and they will be able to choose tolerant/resistant crops in the rotation and thus minimize the yield loss.

Dairy cows are an important part of a sustainable and resilient food production as they facilitate circular flows on the farm and contribute to carbon sequestration, open landscapes and biodiversity. To achieve a sustainable dairy production in all parts of Sweden, we need large as well as small …

The bacterium Lawsonia intracellularis causes the disease proliferative enteropathy. The bacterium is present in >40% of the Swedish piglet-producing herds and production losses are estimated to 2 900 SEK per sow and year. The disease is spread by faeces and the pigs are usually affected after …

The goal with this project is to increase the profitability and production efficiency on Swedish dairy farms by renewing
the genetic evaluation of the breeding value of temperament in dairy cows. We want to investigate if automatic
recordings of behaviour using SLU Gigacow on farm level can improve …

It is well known that storage of animal manure and digestate causes emissions of methane (CH4), nitrous oxide (N2O) and ammonia (NH3). A crust on liquid manure acts both as a physical barrier for NH3 and as a biofilter that oxidize CH4 and NH3. However, N2O can be formed in some crusts, and there …

Structure liming on clayey soils (>15% clay) is one of the prioritized measures for mitigation of phosphorous losses to surrounding water. This project increases the knowledge about the effect of structure liming on phosphorous leaching losses on short and long term by investigating the timing and …

Oilseed rape (OSR) is a profitable and important crop in Swedish agriculture, especially winter OSR which is cultivated on approximately 100000 ha each year. Cultivation of OSR relies on large inputs of fertilizers and pesticides, which has economic costs as well as negative environmental impacts. …

Harness racing is hazardous as horses are running in close proximity at high speeds. Thus, an effective communication between driver and jockey-horse via rein signals to the bit is essential for safety reasons and horse welfare. However, scientific studies on rein tension in Standardbred trotters …

Feeding protein supplements is advantageous because of a positive response in milk production. Rapeseed meal has given better production responses on a protein basis than soybean meal, but its supply is not sufficient to meet the requirements of dairy production. Red clover is one alternative to …
