This project aims at investigating the relationship between animal health and fertility, productivity in terms of milk yield and the economic outcome of dairy farms, and to investigate the conditions under which farms can succeed in combining profitability with high animal health standards.
There are two parts in the project:
1. What are the relationships between economic efficiency, economic risk, milk yield and animal health in dairy farms?
2. What characterise dairy farms that experience synergies between economic efficiency, milk yield and animal health, and those that experience conflicts between these?
This knoweldge can be used for more informed dialogue about the effects of improved animal health on the competitiveness of farms. This knowledge can also be used to formulate strategies to combine a favourable economic situation with high animal health standards in single farms.
Data will be obtained from the Swedish Milk Recording Scheme, the Farm Economic Survey and a survey.

The sensory attributes of the raw milk are of major importance for the quality of the resulting dairy products. Since the early 90’ies, the so-called “blueberry off-flavour” has caused severe economic consequences for affected dairy farmers. The mechanism behind is still unclear, although forages …
