Resistance to anthelmintic drugs is a threat to equine welfare. Like antibiotics, is restrictive use of anthelmintics necessary to retain their effectivity. Thus, targeted selective treatment, based on individual deworming, was introduced a decade ago. However, we have shown that the prevalence of, Strongylus vulgaris, the most pathogenic and feared parasite of horses, has increased since then. Deworming all horses on a regular basis is not a solution of this problem. We need to develop alternative methods to drugs for parasite control. The aims of this project are to a) investigate the survival of overwintered S. vulgaris larvae on pasture b) investigate a predatory fungus which trap parasitic larvae on pasture c) develop clinical diagnostic markers for migrating S. vulgaris larvae. It is vital to reduce the use of anthelmintic drugs without an increased risk of parasitic diseases. The results from this project will introduce new approaches to control and diagnose strongyle parasites.

Brachyspira pilosicoli causes spirochetal diarrhea resulting in reduced growth and great economic losses in pig herds. The disease is treated with antibiotics but today we see an increased incidence of antibiotic resistance in the bacteria, which may lead to difficulties to treat the disease in the …

Innovative outdoor poultry production farms are faced with new challenges. Therefore we intend to: 1) Develop user-friendly guidelines for risk assessment of nutrient load and losses in outdoor systems 2) Identify possible improvements and technical solutions for reducing risk of phosphorus losses …

Conventional production of meat-type chickens in Sweden is characterized by high bio-security and low use of antibiotics. Still, there are indications of variations in day old chick quality causing economic losses in terms of variations in growth and increased condemnation at slaughter. The aim of …

Many horses in training show motion asymmetries, but it is not known if these are due to pain caused by training; or due to individual biological variations. The aim of this project is to initiate three cohort studies where changes in motion symmetry will be monitored over time in riding horses and …

Resistance against antiparasitic drugs is now an increasing problem. Despite a lot of effortd put on preventive measures, such as egg counting and selective treatments, there is still a need for alternative and sustainable methods that do not result in rapid development of drug resistance. The …

The project aims to develop and evaluate molecular tests for the detection of gastrointestinal parasites in sheep and their resistance status to anthelmintics. The genetic markers will then be tested in two major sheep flocks to provide an evidence base for a monitoring program that, ultimately, …
