The rollback of insecticides exposes Swedish horticulture to a multitude of pests. Targeted and sustainable innovations are sorely needed. Here we target several pests of fruits, onion, cabbage, beans and salad and aim to develop 1) species-selective lures using a novel olfactomics platform, 2) use these lures in monitoring in conjunction with an automated early detection system using smart sensor technology, and 3) test these lures in sustainable intervention of these pest. The multispecies, comparative approach is key in the proposal. Proof-of-concept exists for each component: the olfactomics platform (lures for fruit flies), automated detection platform (two prototypes), intervention methods (confusion, disruption, attract & kill). With FORMAS supporting the olfactomics platform, SLF would provide the means for field testing combinations of novel lures, sensors, for early detection and intervention, and provide application horizons well beyond the species and crops mentioned.
