Disease and production disturbances in a herd are often silent, and may cause major losses if they remain undetected. Continuous analysis and monitoring of data already recorded at the farm level can improve profitability. This project will develop methods for monitoring trends in production and animal health indicators, and detect early signs of disease or other disturbances. The aim is to produce information that can help individual farms to avoid losses. The study will compare different methods to develop a continuous and fully automated system of analyses of production data already recorded on the farm (e.g. data on litter size/piglet mortality or feed consumption). The result is an on-farm, data-driven alarm system for disease outbreaks or other hazards. The system can also be used to monitor the farm's productivity and health. The results have the potential to be used by all producers who record similar data, and can also be adapted to other species in animal production.

A few years ago, media reported on a 7 year-old girl who was killed during a riding lesson. The accident evokes questions about children, horses and safety. Children are small and horses big, and the horse is a herd and prey animal whose behaviour is partly controlled by instincts. Today, many …

Green house production depends or reliable substrates and fertilizers. Peat is the dominating substrate in Sweden and internationally. There is a debate about reducing the peat use since the mining for peat may increase climate gas emissions and disturb sensitive ecosystems. Thus, alternative for …

Humus is an important indicator of soil quality and soil organic carbon (SOC) sequestration is a cost-effective measure to reduce the climatic impact of food production systems. The national soil-monitoring program (SMP) show an upward trend in SOC during the past 20 years, mostly attributed to an …

Conventional technology is virtually unable to measure complete GHG budgets of drained organic soils, which may provide misleading results. So, global estimates of GHG emissions are based on coarse assumptions that don’t take into account the complexity of agroecosystems. Better data are needed for …

Agriculture in plain-lands is often specialized in crop production, with no on-farm use of ley as animal fodder, and crop rotations that often includes only annual crops (e.g. oilseed rape, cereals and sugar beets). At the same time, integrating ley in arable cropping systems generates several …

Climate change has brought about changing conditions for agriculture. In recent years precipitation deficit during the growing season has led to a shortage of forage in Sweden. During dry years, irrigation is necessary to achieve optimal yields. In addition, irrigation can bring about positive …
