Harness racing is hazardous as horses are running in close proximity at high speeds. Thus, an effective communication between driver and jockey-horse via rein signals to the bit is essential for safety reasons and horse welfare. However, scientific studies on rein tension in Standardbred trotters during training and racing are lacking. Thus, our project aims to measure rein tension during standardised tests to determine the variation and thresholds that reflect responses to rein signals and relate those to horse behaviour and stress levels. Moreover, we will investigate the effect of rein tension on soft tissue damage in the horse's mouth. Results will serve as a solid base for informed discussions and education of all personnel involved in the Harness racing inductry and equestrian sports. Through an increased knowledge transfer of the effects of rein tension on the horse and how it learns to respond to it, accidents can be prevented and horse welfare safeguarded.
