Human athletes that perform strenuous exercise in cold climates have a high prevalence of chronic airway inflammation and airway hyper-reactivity. Cold weather exercise can also cause inflammation in equine airways. The Swedish Animal Welfare Act and the equine sport industry have regulations for animal welfare for training during adverse weather. However there are no scientific studies that can be used for recommendations for working horses during winter in Nordic climates The aim of this project is to examine whether cold weather exercise induces harmful inflammation of the horse’s airways. Deeper understanding of airway response to the cold weather exercise in the horse can be obtained by comparing inflammatory markers sampled from horses trained in different outdoor temperatures. By understanding how the cold weather exercise affects equine airways, we can provide scientifically based recommendations and regulations for training horses in cold environment during winter conditions.

The equine roundworm, Parascaris, is the major pathogenic parasite of foals, but has also been suggested to be involved in mild equine asthma (EA) in young Standardbreds. We intend to develop a serodiagnostic test with a saliva based sampling method for detection of early Parascaris infection. …

Respiratory disease is a major problem in pig production worldwide causing mortalities and impaired growth with reduced welfare and economic losses. There is increasing evidence that respiratory disease is not always linked to single pathogens but multifactorial, referred to as the porcine …
