The most recent carbon footprint of Swedish pig production was presented in 2009, and no full LCA have been published in 15 years. In recent years major improvements have occurred in Swedish pig production and an updated environmental profile for Swedish pork is needed. The project will identify what impact the production improvements and the influence of good animal health have had on the environmental profile of Swedish pork. The potential of using more by-products will be evaluated and the impact on environmental profile will be analysed. Possibilities to quantify antibiotic use within the LCA frame will be assessed. The results will give pig producers and advisory services updated environmental profiles for Swedish pork which will enable discussion and work with "hot-spots" to raise the competitiveness. The research will yield a basis for marketing of Swedish pork for food industry, public procurers, consumers and society in general resulting in an increased demand of Swedish pork

The purpose of this project is to identify the transmission routes for Campylobacter to broiler flocks and recommend actions at farm level to reduce the number of chickens with Campylobacter. Furthermore, to analyse routines at slaughter including cleaning of slaughterhouses and transport crates to …

Insufficient crop protection is an increasingly limiting factor for crop production. Damage by slugs and cabbage stem flea beetles in winter oilseed rape are timely examples of increasing crop protection problems in Sweden. We will test whether companion cropping winter oilseed rape with frost …

Development of resistance to anthelmintics is a threat to equine welfare. As with antibiotics, restrictive use with anthelmintics in order to retain the effect is essential. Current recommendation for deworming is targeted selective treatment to individuals shedding a certain amount of parasite …

The purpose is to examine haylage 'intolerance' in horses, which is expressed as diarrhoeic faeces in some horses when they are fed haylage (sometimes also when fed hay). A typical appearance is two-phase faeces - one solid and one liquid. It is not known why or how this condition appears, and it …

Many horses in training show motion asymmetries, but it is not known if these are due to pain caused by training; or due to individual biological variations. The aim of this project is to initiate three cohort studies where changes in motion symmetry will be monitored over time in riding horses and …
