SLU has developed an innovative technology that converts human urine to high-quality solid fertiliser. On Gotland, SLU and Gotlands Bryggeri have also shown that urine can effectively fertilise barley, which can be processed further to make beer. Over the next few years, SLU and the Bryggeri need to produce 150 m3 of such beer. But the Bryggeri is concerned about micropollutants that can be present in urine (e.g., pharmaceuticals). Through a three-year project, we aim to address this concern. First, we will do a baseline study to evaluate fate of micropollutants in the urine chain (fertiliser, barley & beer). Second, techniques (advanced oxidation & extraction) will be developed to remove micropollutants so that only plant-essential nutrients are recycled back to farmland. Third, using social science methods and system dynamics modelling, support for recycling urine among food consumers will be assessed. Finally, all the evidence will be presented to stakeholders in the food industry.

The equine roundworm, Parascaris, is the major pathogenic parasite of foals, but has also been suggested to be involved in mild equine asthma (EA) in young Standardbreds. We intend to develop a serodiagnostic test with a saliva based sampling method for detection of early Parascaris infection. …

Equine asthma is a disease with a significant negative impact on horse welfare and performance. Novel biomarkers for the disease have the potential to support diagnosis and prediction of treatment response. In a previous study we discovered genes that were significantly upregulated in lung …

The Swedish dairy industry has made significant improvements in welfare, feeding, disease control and management. However, diagnosis and prevention of a very common metabolic disorder, subacute ruminal acidosis (SARA), remains a challenge. Even in well-managed dairy herds 11 to 26% of SARA cases …

Forage crops occupy a dominant part of the agricultural landscape in Sweden and form the basis of ruminant diets. Farmers aim to maximize harvest yield while maintaining a high level of forage quality. The proposed project is a partnership between SLU and Dataväxt, and aims to develop a decision …

There is an increasing interest in biochar for soil improvement, as carbon sink and as feed additive. Biochar has the ability to bind aflatoxins and anti-nutritional substances in feed and can also bind to certain bacteria, and thereby improve chick performance and health. Biochar can reduce …

Respiratory disease is a major problem in pig production worldwide causing mortalities and impaired growth with reduced welfare and economic losses. There is increasing evidence that respiratory disease is not always linked to single pathogens but multifactorial, referred to as the porcine …

A high rate of on-farm deaths and euthanized cows is an indication of poor animal welfare, leads to economic losses for farmers and is not compatible with sustainable food production. The mortality rate of Swedish dairy cows is high from an international perspective and efforts are needed to …
