The purpose of this project is to develop new non-chemical methods for control of different seedborne-and soilborne pathogens. Aerated steam treatment (ThermoSeed) is a modern and environmentally friendly method for seedborne pathogen sanitation, mainly used on cereals. We intend to develop the technology for treatment of field vegetable seeds and grain legumes. ThermoSeed uses the patented thermal disinfection tool which applies hot humid air to the seeds as a form of steam pasteurization. The method will also be combined with treatments using different microorganisms for biological control of seedborne and soilborne diseases. The project aims to increase quality and reduce wastage and quality impact caused by plant pathogens and to reduce the environmental impact with maintained effect on diseases. The expected results are adapted treatments for different types of crops and plant protection problems and that these treatments should be approved in organic and conventional farming.

Oilseed rape (OSR) is a profitable and important crop in Swedish agriculture, especially winter OSR which is cultivated on approximately 100000 ha each year. Cultivation of OSR relies on large inputs of fertilizers and pesticides, which has economic costs as well as negative environmental impacts. …

The rollback of insecticides exposes Swedish horticulture to a multitude of pests. Targeted and sustainable innovations are sorely needed. Here we target several pests of fruits, onion, cabbage, beans and salad and aim to develop 1) species-selective lures using a novel olfactomics platform, 2) use …

Fruit tree canker, caused by the fungus Neonectria ditissima, has become a threat for Swedish apple production. No efficient protective measures are available and no complete genetic resistance is known in apple. However, apple genotypes differ in the level of partial resistance which must be fully …

Healthy seeds are a prerequisite for sustainable food systems. The seed-borne plant disease, common bunt (CB) in wheat, caused by the fungi Tilletia tritici and T. laevis, is a major problem in agriculture. Efficient chemical seed treatments exist, but it is often difficult to keep up with autumn …

A major challenge facing agriculture is handling water excess and deficit exacerbated by climate change, while reducing eutrophication. Controlled drainage (CD) has the potential to address these issues and improve yield stability. Despite CDs clear benefits and state subsidies for CD installation, …
