Insect bite hypersensitivity (IBH) associated with Culicoides biting midges is the most common allergic skin disease in
horses, seriously reducing welfare of affected horses. The main symptom is severe pruritus, with risk of self-infected
open wounds. The choice for treatment and prevention of this common distressing disease remains a major challenge
for the veterinary profession and horse owners, as there is little evidence-based research for disease management.
While the understanding of the disease at a genetic and immunological level has improved in recent years, studies on
how IBH affects animal welfare and the behaviour of affected animals are lacking, and the welfare of affected animals
would benefit greatly from scientifically-based guidelines for improved prophylaxis and treatment. The aims of this
project are to investigate the effect of IBH in animal welfare and behaviour and to examine the effect of repellent
collars in the prevention of symptoms in IBH susceptible horses.

A main challenge for regions with intensive livestock production is phosphorus (P) surplus on farms, resulting in low P use efficiency and losses to waters. The project will provide solutions to increase P recycling from animal manure. This will decrease our dependency on imported P fertilizers, …

The goal of the project is to digitize the data from the Swedish official field trials through automated estimates of important traits such as germination, growth, resistance, maturity and the effect of plant protection products. The purpose is to streamline and improve scoring of both diseases but …

In the proposed project, we will explore the benefits of increasing the longevity of dairy cows under Swedish conditions by changes in herd management. We will focus on effects on methane emissions by modelling, using existing data from the Swedish Official Milk Recording Scheme and results from an …

Consumers appreciate onions in all kinds of cooking. Onions can be grown in Sweden with good results. Onions can be stored for a long period. There is a potential to increase the self-sufficiency in onions. To achieve this, a better knowledge of long-term-storage potential indicator factors that …

Conventional technology is virtually unable to measure complete GHG budgets of drained organic soils, which may provide misleading results. So, global estimates of GHG emissions are based on coarse assumptions that don’t take into account the complexity of agroecosystems. Better data are needed for …

All horses grazing freely are at risk of parasitic diseases. Due to a growing problem with drug resistance in parasites, there is a need to improve the diagnostic methods. One important problem with today's situation is that one diagnostic procedure costs significantly more than one treatment, both …

An alarmingly high number of accidents involve humans and horses and the welfare of many horses is compromised as shown by signs of discomfort specifically during ridden work. Research indicates that this is due to miscommunication between riders/handlers and horses and mismanagement caused by …

Viral infections of horses have significant impact on animal welfare and can lead to huge economic losses. One of the first early signs of a viral infection is the development of fever and to at this early step be able to identify the agent behind the infection would lead to rapid and correct …

Improved feed efficiency (FE) is a key parameter for increased sustainability in modern diary production. The project aims to increase the efficiency of converting feed into milk and reducing the environmental impact of dairy production. In order for farmers and breeding companies to include FE as …
