Our plan is to develop a simple, cheap and safe tool to estimate the body size and weight of dairy cows analysed from photographs taken with smartphones. This tool would directly contribute to increased competitiveness, good working environment and animal welfare in dairy production. It will also contribute to more sustainable dairy production by reducing the development towards larger, less feed efficient and promote more climate-friendly cows. During the development of the algorithm that will estimate the body size and weight of dairy cows, we will use neural networks, image analysis and photographs taken both by researchers and by the farmers themselves. The tool would have a vast potential to support breeding for more sustainable cows and regular follow-ups for efficient use of feed and management interventions. This digital and easily accessible solution will strengthen the competitiveness of dairy farms and the dialogue between farmer and advisors concerning individual cows.

Adding flowers to the cropping system that support beneficial insects is a promising option to achieve crop protection
in Swedish agriculture and horticulture. However, the wide-spread adoption of this approach has been hampered by
limited economic benefit and the risk of propagating pests and …

Climate projections for Sweden indicate higher temperatures during summer and larger variability in precipitation between years. This poses enormous challenges for Swedish agriculture. The main aim of this project is to investigate relationships between soil management, soil quality and crop yield. …

About 200 dairy farms in Sweden use recycled manure solids (RMS) as bedding material and the number is increasing. Advantages is low price, reliable availability and good cow comfort. The main disadvantage is the risk of increased bacterial growth on the lying area affecting especially udder health …

The project aims are to use the information about cow's DNA profile to estimate the severity of fertility problems caused by specific genetic defects in the Swedish Red (SRB) and Holstein dairy breeds, and to estimate the economic impact of pregnancy losses caused by these genetic defects. Our goal …

Every year, about 500,000 claw trimmings are recorded in Swedish dairy cattle. The aim of claw trimming is to detect, treat and prevent painful claw lesions. However, the claw trimming in itself can be harmful and cause claw lesions if it is not done correctly. The aim of the project is to develop …
