This project aims to create a popular scientific review of the use of leys for livestock. Target groups are the agricultural
sector and industry. The project has five work packages (WP); administration, crop production, harvest and
conservation, feed value for different animals, and economy. The project description defines important aspects, which
will be addressed within each WP. A total of 18 people from SLU, RISE and a consultant firm will work on the report,
and each WP has a leader, who is responsible for delivering material according to time plan. A reference group of
nine people from the agricultural community will follow the project and will assess the progress continuously to make
sure the report has the right focus and becomes useful. An international expert group with researchers from Sweden,
Norway, Finland, Denmark and USA will give input on the international aspects of the report. The report will be written
in English and translated to Swedish before submission.

Effective communication between driver and horse via rein signals is essential for safety and horse welfare. Good driveability should at best reflect the absence of unnecessary harsh equipment. Yet, many trotters suffer from mouth lesions but associations with equipment, rein tension and motion …

Human athletes that perform strenuous exercise in cold climates have a high prevalence of chronic airway inflammation and airway hyper-reactivity. Cold weather exercise can also cause inflammation in equine airways. The Swedish Animal Welfare Act and the equine sport industry have regulations for …

Racing unshod improves the speed, but not all horses have sufficient hoof quality to run barefoot repeatedly without risking health problems. If measures of the ability to race barefoot based on routinely recorded data can be used as a genetic selection tool, it will improve animal health and …

The work in horse stables is commonly characterised by heavy and monotonous work, a low degree of
mechanisation and often outdated and worn facilities, and studies have shown a high prevalence of musculoskeletal
complaints for employees at riding schools. The objective of this study is to evaluate …

The amount and nutritive content of forages has major impact on equine behaviour, health, and disease. In the Nordic countries, forages for horses consist almost exclusively of grasses, and to a limited extent of legumes. Legumes contain more crude protein than grasses, hence locally produced …

The project aims to study the long-term effect of structure liming, and to test if minimum tillage can prolong the duration of this effect. The hypothesis is that structure liming effects diminish over time, but by minimizing soil tillage we can prolong this effect. Studies will be performed in six …

Soil organic carbon is an important factor for soil health and productivity. Soil carbon sequestration (SCS) also plays a crucial role in meeting the climate goals. For that purpose, catch- and cover crops are identified as a cost-effective management practice that combines SCS with other ecosystem …

SLU has developed an innovative technology that converts human urine to high-quality solid fertiliser. On Gotland, SLU and Gotlands Bryggeri have also shown that urine can effectively fertilise barley, which can be processed further to make beer. Over the next few years, SLU and the Bryggeri need …

The risk of soil compaction is high in Sweden, as soils are often wet during field operations and because heavy machinery is used. The predicted increase in precipitation and increase of extreme weather events with heavy rainfall will potentially increase this risk, indicating a need for a reliable …
