This project aims to create a popular scientific review of the knowledge of using leys for horses, with focus on feeding, and based on existing research within the area. The target group is the horse industry in Sweden and the project comprise Nordic conditions. The project consists of three parts; nutritive values of forages for horses; harvest, conservation and storage of forages for horses; and hygienic quality ad feed safety in forages for horses. These parts are all important for both horse keepers and forage producers. The project group consists of researchers from SLU, who are aided by a reference group with representatives for the horse industry. International experts are also associated to the project. The review will be written as a report in Swedish directed to forage producers and horse keepers, and it will be accompanied by a popular science summary in Swedish as well as scientific publication in English. The project is coordinated with a parallel project funded by SLF.

We need to remediate the capacity of agricultural landscapes to retain water, nutrients and sediments to make them
more resilient to the increasing frequency of flooding, drought and pollution expected with the climate change. It can
be done by remediating existing narrow ditches into ditches with …

It is well known that storage of animal manure and digestate causes emissions of methane (CH4), nitrous oxide (N2O) and ammonia (NH3). A crust on liquid manure acts both as a physical barrier for NH3 and as a biofilter that oxidize CH4 and NH3. However, N2O can be formed in some crusts, and there …

Insulin dysregulation and hyperinsulinemia is a horse welfare problem that also increase the incidence of the severely painful condition laminitis in horses. Today, no pharmacological treatment is available but recent weak evidence suggest that Sodium-glucose cotransporters (SGLT) inhibitors (e.g. …

The bacterium Lawsonia intracellularis causes the disease proliferative enteropathy. The bacterium is present in >40% of the Swedish piglet-producing herds and production losses are estimated to 2 900 SEK per sow and year. The disease is spread by faeces and the pigs are usually affected after …

It is generally accepted that muscle enzyme activity (CK and AST) levels in plasma may increase in Standardbreds and Thoroughbreds after exercise and racing, indicating muscle damage. However, in one recent study on healthy Standardbred trotters fed a forage only diet muscle enzyme activity levels …

Structure liming on clayey soils (>15% clay) is one of the prioritized measures for mitigation of phosphorous losses to surrounding water. This project increases the knowledge about the effect of structure liming on phosphorous leaching losses on short and long term by investigating the timing and …

Diseases that can limit Swedish OSR production include clubroot, Sclerotinia stem rot (Ssr) and the recently escalating blackleg. Novel DNA-methods, based on qPCR and LAMP are used to detect and to further develop diagnostic tools to enhance food and feed production by providing site-specific …

The project aims to study the long-term effect of structure liming, and to test if minimum tillage can prolong the duration of this effect. The hypothesis is that structure liming effects diminish over time, but by minimizing soil tillage we can prolong this effect. Studies will be performed in six …

Soil organic carbon is an important factor for soil health and productivity. Soil carbon sequestration (SCS) also plays a crucial role in meeting the climate goals. For that purpose, catch- and cover crops are identified as a cost-effective management practice that combines SCS with other ecosystem …
