This project aims to create a popular scientific review of the knowledge of using leys for horses, with focus on feeding, and based on existing research within the area. The target group is the horse industry in Sweden and the project comprise Nordic conditions. The project consists of three parts; nutritive values of forages for horses; harvest, conservation and storage of forages for horses; and hygienic quality ad feed safety in forages for horses. These parts are all important for both horse keepers and forage producers. The project group consists of researchers from SLU, who are aided by a reference group with representatives for the horse industry. International experts are also associated to the project. The review will be written as a report in Swedish directed to forage producers and horse keepers, and it will be accompanied by a popular science summary in Swedish as well as scientific publication in English. The project is coordinated with a parallel project funded by SLF.

Racing unshod improves the speed, but not all horses have sufficient hoof quality to run barefoot repeatedly without risking health problems. If measures of the ability to race barefoot based on routinely recorded data can be used as a genetic selection tool, it will improve animal health and …

The work in horse stables is commonly characterised by heavy and monotonous work, a low degree of
mechanisation and often outdated and worn facilities, and studies have shown a high prevalence of musculoskeletal
complaints for employees at riding schools. The objective of this study is to evaluate …

The amount and nutritive content of forages has major impact on equine behaviour, health, and disease. In the Nordic countries, forages for horses consist almost exclusively of grasses, and to a limited extent of legumes. Legumes contain more crude protein than grasses, hence locally produced …

The equine roundworm, Parascaris, is the major pathogenic parasite of foals, but has also been suggested to be involved in mild equine asthma (EA) in young Standardbreds. We intend to develop a serodiagnostic test with a saliva based sampling method for detection of early Parascaris infection. …

Equine asthma is a disease with a significant negative impact on horse welfare and performance. Novel biomarkers for the disease have the potential to support diagnosis and prediction of treatment response. In a previous study we discovered genes that were significantly upregulated in lung …

The Swedish dairy industry has made significant improvements in welfare, feeding, disease control and management. However, diagnosis and prevention of a very common metabolic disorder, subacute ruminal acidosis (SARA), remains a challenge. Even in well-managed dairy herds 11 to 26% of SARA cases …

Forage crops occupy a dominant part of the agricultural landscape in Sweden and form the basis of ruminant diets. Farmers aim to maximize harvest yield while maintaining a high level of forage quality. The proposed project is a partnership between SLU and Dataväxt, and aims to develop a decision …

The goal with this project is to increase the profitability and production efficiency on Swedish dairy farms by renewing
the genetic evaluation of the breeding value of temperament in dairy cows. We want to investigate if automatic
recordings of behaviour using SLU Gigacow on farm level can improve …

To grow with reduced use of glyphosate is of great concern driven by the requirements for integrated pest management, the risk of herbicide resistance and a potential coming ban on glyphosate. It requires balancing between environmental effects and impact on yield and economy. The project's goal is …
