This project aims to modify existing sensor systems for adapted nitrogen fertilization to consider water stress at
supplementary fertilization in cereals. Different approaches to consider sensor data and soil information will be tested
in field trials. Current commercial systems interpret water stress as nitrogen deficiency with excessive fertilization,
poor nitrogen efficiency and losses as a consequence. We know that water stress, and the ability to utilize nitrogen
fertilization, can vary greatly within a field. The project ranges from needs driven research to the potential
implementation in existing platforms for site specific fertilization and will be conducted in collaboration between soil
scientist and hydrologists at SLU and experts on decision support and infrastructures for site-specific fertilization at
Yara and Solvi. The goal is improved nitrogen utilization with higher yields and reduced environmental impact, as well
as better preparedness for drier summers.

Cannabinoids have potential to induce analgesia and muscle relaxation which would be beneficial for equine practice. Today there is no drug labelled for veterinary use containing these cannabinoids, but there are some herbal oil products which unofficially have been reported to be used in horses, …

Worm infections in free-range layers are increasingly causing health problem in the poultry industry. Despite this, there are knowledge gaps about how worms are detected in living laying hens and on methods for how they can be controlled in modern free-range housing systems. The objectives of the …

The sensory attributes of the raw milk are of major importance for the quality of the resulting dairy products. Since the early 90’ies, the so-called “blueberry off-flavour” has caused severe economic consequences for affected dairy farmers. The mechanism behind is still unclear, although forages …

A cornerstone of the Swedish Food Strategy is trust in Swedish food production. Yet each year Swedish farmers and food processors lose both money and trust due to food fraud, especially for non-Swedish meat relabelled as Swedish. Most fraud remains undetected. A recent analytical development, Rapid …

Conventional technology is virtually unable to measure complete GHG budgets of drained organic soils, which may provide misleading results. So, global estimates of GHG emissions are based on coarse assumptions that don’t take into account the complexity of agroecosystems. Better data are needed for …

Acquired equine polyneuropathy (AEP) is a devastating neurologic disease affecting Nordic horses. Characteristic histopathological changes have been shown in the peripheral nerves of horses euthanized due to the disease. These include re- and demyelination as well as hypertrophy of perikaria and …

A few years ago, media reported on a 7 year-old girl who was killed during a riding lesson. The accident evokes questions about children, horses and safety. Children are small and horses big, and the horse is a herd and prey animal whose behaviour is partly controlled by instincts. Today, many …

Green house production depends or reliable substrates and fertilizers. Peat is the dominating substrate in Sweden and internationally. There is a debate about reducing the peat use since the mining for peat may increase climate gas emissions and disturb sensitive ecosystems. Thus, alternative for …

Humus is an important indicator of soil quality and soil organic carbon (SOC) sequestration is a cost-effective measure to reduce the climatic impact of food production systems. The national soil-monitoring program (SMP) show an upward trend in SOC during the past 20 years, mostly attributed to an …
