This project aims to modify existing sensor systems for adapted nitrogen fertilization to consider water stress at
supplementary fertilization in cereals. Different approaches to consider sensor data and soil information will be tested
in field trials. Current commercial systems interpret water stress as nitrogen deficiency with excessive fertilization,
poor nitrogen efficiency and losses as a consequence. We know that water stress, and the ability to utilize nitrogen
fertilization, can vary greatly within a field. The project ranges from needs driven research to the potential
implementation in existing platforms for site specific fertilization and will be conducted in collaboration between soil
scientist and hydrologists at SLU and experts on decision support and infrastructures for site-specific fertilization at
Yara and Solvi. The goal is improved nitrogen utilization with higher yields and reduced environmental impact, as well
as better preparedness for drier summers.

This project aims at developing and evaluating statistical methods that may provide better predictions than present methods when the number of trials is small. The number of trials in Swedish crop variety testing has decreased since the 1980s. Nowadays, the number of trials is so small that …

The aim of the project is to develop tools which can be used for individually adapted lactation lengths based on the biological conditions of the cow. Today a one year calving interval and a short lactation period, is recommended. The recommendations are based on 30 years old information and do not …

During recent decades the area with brushwood has increased in the Swedish rural landscape. A study has shown that the annual harvest of brushwood for fuel purposes could amount to about 6 TWh. Some advantages with the utilization of brushwood as fuel are that the growth areas do not compete with …

Swedish strawberry production suffers from several severe insect pests. When usage of traditional insecticides is phased out and IPM implemented novel green methods for pest control are urgently needed. The strawberry tortricid, Acleris comariana, is a severe pest on strawberries. Its larvae feed …

Motor laterality, such as left or right-handedness, is a well-known asymmetric phenomenon in both humans and animals, incl. horses. Concurrently, lameness caused by orthopaedic injury is a common cause for asymmetry. In our study of riding horses in training, 73 % had motion asymmetries, warranting …

A few years ago, media reported on a 7 year-old girl who was killed during a riding lesson. The accident evokes questions about children, horses and safety. Children are small and horses big, and the horse is a herd and prey animal whose behaviour is partly controlled by instincts. Today, many …
