Just going to the bathroom is contributing to algae blooms and climate change. Sweden alone releases roughly 15400 tonnes of N and 240 tonnes of P into lakes, rivers and seas, through municipal wastewater (including after treatment). Urine contains 80% of the plant nutrients found in wastewater and can be used as a fertilizer instead. At SLU, we have developed a revolutionary technology that converts >90% of the nutrients from urine into a dry fertilizer. The aim of the project is to produce a tailored fertilizer from urine and a new, more sustainably produced, beer that tastes exactly the same as the conventional beer. We will also validate the scalability of nutrient recycling through large-scale beer production. We have partnered with Spiran, a toilet rental company on Gotland, to collect and treat urine > 30 m3 of urine to grow barley as well as with Gotlands Bryggeri (daughter company to Spendrups) to produce a new sustainable beer.

For sustainable future development, it is essential to recirculate plant nutrients from different parts of society,
especially sewage plants, back to arable land. The aim of the proposed project is to ensure that high-quality fertiliser
products attractive for agricultural use are produced from …

In the proposed project, we will explore the benefits of increasing the longevity of dairy cows under Swedish conditions by changes in herd management. We will focus on effects on methane emissions by modelling, using existing data from the Swedish Official Milk Recording Scheme and results from an …

The purpose of this project is to investigate to what extent substances in algae inhibit microbial methane formation in cows. Several substances, so-called bioactive substances, in red, green and brown algae, have a significant methane reducing effect. These are promising results but in order to …

The sensory attributes of the raw milk are of major importance for the quality of the resulting dairy products. Since the early 90’ies, the so-called “blueberry off-flavour” has caused severe economic consequences for affected dairy farmers. The mechanism behind is still unclear, although forages …

Climate change has brought about changing conditions for agriculture. In recent years precipitation deficit during the growing season has led to a shortage of forage in Sweden. During dry years, irrigation is necessary to achieve optimal yields. In addition, irrigation can bring about positive …
